Oelberg: a large site, small berries and expressive wines

Welcome to Oelberg. At around 60 hectares, the recording introduces it as the largest individual vineyard site on the Roter Hang. The origins of its name remain uncertain.

A name with more than one possible meaning

In the Middle Ages, monasteries played an important part in developing wine-growing across Germany and Europe. One possible explanation therefore connects the name with the biblical Mount of Olives. Another refers to the texture of the wines, which are often described as full-bodied and supple. Both explanations remain suggestions rather than established facts.

Red soil, sunshine and wind

The south-facing site receives plenty of sunshine. Fissures in the red rock allow vines to root deeply, while the slope is also exposed to strong winds. Soil, sunshine and air movement together create Oelberg’s distinctive microclimate.
