The circular walk begins at the Kilianskirche
Exceptional wines, far-reaching views and fresh air: the Roter Hang Wine Experience Trail combines a walk through the vineyards with stories about the landscape and the people who shape it. The winegrowers have created a circular route of around eight kilometres with twelve stops. Audio guides and QR codes accompany you along the way, in the very place where Roter Hang Riesling grows.
A church to guide your way
At the starting point stands St Kilian’s Church, whose predecessor was known as St Mary’s. You can see it from many stops along the trail. Its silhouette also appears in the logo of the Wein vom Roten Hang association, making it a familiar landmark throughout your walk.
The Niersteiner Glöck vineyard
On the other side lies the Niersteiner Glöck. Often described as Germany’s oldest vineyard site, it is closely connected with the history of the church. Its name is also associated with the church and its bells. Like some of Europe’s famous vineyards, the Glöck is completely enclosed by a historic wall. This shelters it from cold winds and contributes to its distinctive microclimate.
The vineyard covers about 2.1 hectares, slightly more than two football pitches. The recording describes a traditional planting of two-thirds Riesling and one-third Pinot Noir on loess loam. The south-facing site is farmed organically.
Wines that take time to develop
The wines of the Glöck differ from those of neighbouring sites more strongly influenced by the red Rotliegend rock. The audio guide describes its Rieslings as fruity, with delicate acidity and considerable ageing potential. They need time to reveal their character.
The Glöck belongs entirely to the Staatliche Weinbaudomäne Oppenheim. The German Wine Institute has recognised it as a highlight of German wine culture. From here, the route leads to the first stop, Coastal View.
