Views from the watchtower and space for nature
Begin your panorama in the south: opposite you lies Nierstein’s Paterberg. Unlike the Roter Hang, its vineyards are characterised by yellowish limestone soils. Across the Rhine to the south-east stands the Melibokus, a prominent hill in the Odenwald. Continue looking northwards: past Trebur and Darmstadt, Frankfurt’s skyline and airport, along the Taunus and the outskirts of Mainz, and back towards the Roter Hang.
A Nierstein landmark
The Wartturm is one of Nierstein’s landmarks, with origins as a medieval signal tower. From such vantage points, flags or lights could warn people of approaching danger. The recording also recalls the use of medieval towers as customs posts along trading routes. Local tradition links its construction to stones taken from the former Königsstuhl between Nierstein and Lörzweiler.
Ecological compensation areas among the vines
At this stop, you are standing on an ecological compensation area. During land consolidation, land is taken out of agricultural production to create habitats for plants and animals. The audio guide compares a general allocation of six per cent with a figure of ten per cent for the Roter Hang.
The recording gives 2029 as the planned completion date for the land consolidation project and describes approximately 900 hectares of vineyard land alongside 90 hectares of ecological compensation areas. These figures reflect the plans at the time of the recording; they are not a current progress report.
More than Riesling
Beyond the Roter Hang, Nierstein and Schwabsburg offer suitable conditions for many grape varieties. Rheinhessen classics such as Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau and Dornfelder grow alongside Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. Sauvignon Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, Merlot and Blaufränkisch add to the range. The wine estates give these varieties their own interpretations, showing the diversity of the vineyard landscape around Nierstein.
